This Halloween — take trick or treat to the next level!  The newest “sexiest” day of the year – is officially Halloween.  And I’ve noticed every year costumes get a little sexier. How do you pick a costume that looks sexy on you?

Chicago fashion designer Jada Michaels of JadaMichaels.com wants to give you some simple tips — to add a splash of sexiness, to your costume and a chic ‘how-to’ — for you to choose the perfect fit that flatters your figure.

1. Add Eye Catchers: Subtle seduction can be found in the addition of small details to your costume such as bright red lipstick, false lashes, glitter, animal print, a loud bra and panties, sexy stockings, garters or saucy stilettos.

For example, if you are dressed as a sexy cop, try unzipping your costume a little bit to reveal a leopard or hot pink bra underneath.

2. Choose Your Assets: The most important thing about Halloween costumes is to remember that you don’t have to show off everything to be sexy. In fact, it is actually the tease that makes the costume sexy.

There are four main types of costumes for women: two-piece sets, tight mini dresses, corsets and short rompers. If you want to accent your waist, show off your abs or make your bustline stand out, then choose a two-piece set. To showcase long legs, try a tight mini dress or short romper. Corsets work well to tuck in tummies and accentuate busts.  Look for a corset that laces up the back to create a cinched-in hourglass figure.

3. Get In Character: Make your costume come to life by having a unique prop and being prepared with a fun and flirty ice-breaker line. For example, if you choose to be a sexy cop, carry a ticket and pen with you as a prop and write tickets to offending guys and girls that are too hot to be in public.

Hello Divas,

As you’re picking out Halloween pumpkins this week, be sure to get an extra one. What he have in store is going to make your taste buds sing. When it’s time to hollow out your new stylista flaired Jack O’ Lantern, try hollowing out a second pumpkin, to make an amazingly spooktacular Pumpkin Soup from the “flesh” of the pumpkin and serve it up in your very own pumpkin “caldron.” The soup gets its creamy texture from Green Valley Organics lactose free kefir. And, it being lactose free and gluten free, the only spooky gurgling sounds will be coming from goblins and ghosts – not from the tummies of any of your fellow socialistas or guests that may be lactose intolerant or sensitive.  ;-)

Psst **Substitute** the fresh pumpkin with canned pumpkin or butternut squash if you like.)

PUMPKIN (OR BUTTERNUT SQUASH) SOUP WITH KEFIR

1 regular pumpkin (rind removed) or butternut squash (rind removed) or 1 large can of

100% unflavored pumpkin puree

1 medium yellow onion

2 carrots

2 celery stalks

2 cloves of garlic

2 quarts low sodium chicken or vegetable broth

2 bay leaves

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. dried thyme

1 Tbsp. fresh, chopped or 1 t. dried sage leaves

1 tsp. fresh chopped ginger

3 Tbsp. of olive oil

1 quart Green Valley Organics Lactose Free Plain Kefir

Salt and/or pepper to taste

Preparation

1. In a blender or food processor, chop the pumpkin and vegetables into small bits.

2. Put the olive oil into the pot— heat; add vegetables, garlic and spices.

3. Cook and stir for about 10 minutes.

4. Pour in the broth.

5. Bring to a boil and let simmer for about 40 minutes.

6. Turn off the heat and let it set for 20 minutes to cool. Remove bay leaves.

7. In portions, put the soup back into the blender or processor and puree.

8. Put the puree back into the pot and add/blend in the kefir, reheat slightly.

9. Serve. To garnish, add a little nutmeg and sage.

And from pumpkins to peaches – be on the lookout for NEW Green Valley Organics Peach Yogurt with pieces of juicy, sweet organic peaches at the bottom of each cup – its peachy keen!

And for dessert, try some AMAZING!

Sour Cream Pumpkin BUNDT Cake

Hello Lovelies,

Media Maven here, and we have an awesome pet friendly Halloween post courtesy of  our fave LifeStylista, Andrea Woroch:

Cats loathe costumes but some dogs positively revel in dressing up for Halloween. Strap on a pair of fairy wings and they begin to strut their stuff, eager to trick-or-treat like a little kid.

Dressing up your dachshund can get pretty pricey, however, without sewing skills or a big budget. Here’s a list of easy and frugal ideas to keep Toto happy come Oct. 31. And before you costume your canine; be sure to check out “Dog Halloween Safety Tips” from PuppyinTraining.com.

1. Octopus
This works best with taller dogs. Stuff pantyhose with a light material, sew eight of them together in a cluster, and pin to your dog’s harness.

2. Chippendale Dancer

Two English Bulldogs dressed up as a Bee and Devil

Cut the collar and cuffs from a disposable white shirt and secure to to a large dog’s neck and front paws. Create a bow tie out of a strip of black cloth. Encourage donations by tucking a few $1 bills into their collar. This works really well if you have a dog able to dance on their hind legs.

3. Little Red Riding Hood
A good costume for a small dog, this one is also easy on the sewing impaired. Hit Joann Fabrics for a yard of red material with some starch to it, like felt or flannel, and a length of red ribbon. Cut the material into a hood and cape shape then baste the ribbon to the neck of the hood.

4. Gangsta Pup
Let your street-wise hound go gangsta style with a hoodie and gold medallions. Make the bling out of Yoplait yogurt lids and pick up a hoodie on the cheapside with a Petsmart coupon from sites like CouponSherpa.com.

5. Vampire
Those canine teeth will come in handy when your dog takes on the most popular costume of the decade. Simply cut a swath of black silk into a cape shape and attach it to the collar. If you have sewing skills or a glue gun, create a stand-up collar by melding red silk to a cardboard frame.

6. Winged Fairy
Teacup pups might be too tiny to handle wings, but a small dog should be able to pull off this low-cost outfit. Read how to create this look with directions from instructables.com.

7. Rescue Dog
This one’s a natural for St. Bernards, but even funnier on a small dog. Strap an empty beer or pop can to their collar and use a long piece of red felt to create a waistband painted with a white cross. For a humorous twist, larger dogs might be able to handle an empty coffee can instead of the expected beer barrel.

8. Pillow Camel
From all reports, dachshunds enjoy a bit of dress up now and then. Turn your weiner dog into a camel by attaching an old sofa pillow in a caramel shade to a center harness. For a lumpier look, wrap a belt around the middle to give them two humps.

9. Go Pre-made
Walmart has added to their online costume section with an entire line of outfits for dogs. Here you’ll find everything from maid to sheriff costumes for various size dogsand all at bargain-friendly prices. And with so many other online Halloween stores selling pet costumes, you’ll likely find something fitting for Fido, whether freaky, festive or funny. Just remember to search for promo codes to score savings and free shipping before checking out.

Hello Divas,

As you know Halloween generates excitement in children unrivaled by virtually any other holiday. With this thought (fact) in mind, allow us to to introduce Melissa Bernstein who has designed thousands of toys over the past 24 years for Melissa & Doug. The company she co-founded, with a single-minded focus on “real play”—creative, boundless, non-judgmental exploration—to help children discover untold worlds of imagination and growth.

Melissa’s objective is to create a dialogue that will shift the focus of today’s technology-driven society, balancing it with time-honored childhood values of creative play, artistic expression and interaction with others. Her dedication to listening to parents has positioned the company as a trusted partner by millions of families, and the playthings she creates are designed with those families—and her own six children—in mind.

Although Halloween is OFFICIALLY the one day of the year when children and adults everywhere are given license to dress up, at Melissa & Doug we feel it shouldn’t be. At Melissa & Doug, we believe that role play is a crucial, YEAR-ROUND activity and shouldn’t be put removed and placed into a closet on November 1st

Melissa has included Tips on the Importance of Role Play and Why Parents should Encourage their Children to Put Down the Remote or Nintendo and be Creative.

1.     Allow your child to take part in choosing exactly how they will be dressed for the occasion, it gives them power and investment in the holiday

2.     Role play is a critical form of pretend play, and a crucial aspect of early childhood development.  It is one of the best ways to help a child to develop an understanding of the world.  When children are given the opportunity to CHOOSE a costume or character they wish to portray, they are given the ability to explore the areas they are most interested in

3.     Dressing up helps children (and adults!) to get rid of their fears and inhibitions, and be free to “act out” something they may not be comfortable expressing on a daily basis.  Children develop social awareness, self confidence and are more open to exploring themselves and expressing pent-up thoughts or ideas.

4.     Role play offers an excuse to let go of one’s inhibitions and be free.  Such free, unstructured play offers tremendous benefits developmentally and a HIGH level of creativity!  This will build strong imaginations and fertile, innovative minds.

5.     The best costumes are ones in which children are truly transported to another place and begin to believe or act as if the character they’re portraying actually would.

6.     Testing the personas of different characters is a great way to teach children about different roles and their various behaviors.  A pirate can talk with an accent, a police officer can speak with authority, and a chef can come up with tantalizing recipes that are created and served to an enthusiastic audience.  Role playing involves improvisation and having the awareness of how different characters act, and portraying the appropriate emotions and characteristics that depict them!

7.     Grandparents can easily incorporate dress up and pretend play into play time with grand-kids.  They can create a special dress-up/pretend play closet or chest, and allow grandchildren to explore it whenever they visit.

Hola Lovelies,

Halloween brings images of ghosts and ghouls, but more importantly it provides the perfect opportunity to satisfy sweet-tooth cravings. Individually wrapped, store-bought candies have always been a staple for kids at Halloween parties, but what about the adults?

Nielsen Massey Vanillas’ Vanilla Cinnamon Apples add an element of sophistication to this year’s festivities and are sure to have guests lining up for seconds. The recipe, found below, combines the savory flavor of Nielsen-Massey’s Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste with the delicious tart taste of fall apples to create a treat that is overflowing with gooey goodness. (Just don’t forget the napkins). Some grocery coupons may apply.

Vanilla Cinnamon Apples

Serves 4 4 baking apples 3 tbsp. butter ¾ cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 1 tsp. Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. allspice 1 tbsp. brandy ¼ cup raisins ¼ cup walnuts Pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly coat the bottom of a shallow baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Cut a thin slice from the bottom of each apple so it will stand upright. Scoop out the core of each apple from the top down with the small end of a melon ball cutter, making sure not to core all the way through the apple.

Combine the butter, brown sugar and vanilla paste in a medium saucepan and cook over low heat until the butter is melted, stirring frequently. Remove from the heat and stir in the cinnamon, allspice, brandy, raisins, walnuts and salt. Fill the apples with equal amounts of the filling using a teaspoon. Place the apples in the prepared baking dish. Bake for 20 minutes or until caramelized and fork tender.
