True Love & Romance Never Expires

Hello Darlings,

Here’s an interesting piece courtesy of Kate Forgach. This one can actually make you go…”nooo waayyyyy”. I cannot ever imagine my grandmother dating and not being either widowed or married! It’s shocking to learn that seniors 65 and older are amongst the dating sites looking for “Prince Charming” (to get married)!

Romance Has No Expiration Date

So you think marriage is for the young? Check this out: As of the 2010 U.S. Census, more than 16-million unmarried Americans were 65 and older. But these single seniors aren’t willing to sit on their laurels; Between 2006 and 2007 there was a 140-percent increase in senior online dating.

Clearly the message that marriage makes you live longer has made its way to the over-65 crowd. Seniors also have learned the effectiveness of online dating sites. According to a 2011 international study conducted by the Oxford Internet Institute and funded by eHarmony, middle-aged men and women were the most likely people to use online dating sites, a statistic that particularly holds true for seniors.

With these glaring statistics to back up entrepreneurs, many new businesses have arisen catering to seniors interested in relationships. Here’s a sampling.

1. Dating Sites
Let’s see; There’s SeniorMatch, SeniorPeopleMeet, DatingforSeniors, SeniorFriendFinder, PrimeSingles, SilverSingles, DatingForSeniors…pant, pant, pant. And we’re just getting started. More commonly known sites, like Match.com and eHarmony, also appeal to the over-65 crowd. And let’s not forget AgeMatch, which targets cougars and sugar daddies seeking companionship out of their age range.

An interesting aside to this category is the research findings of two Bowling Green State University professors of gerontology. In the early stages of the study, they’ve found indications that seniors market themselves different on dating sites than their youthful counterparts. Appearance and status drop to the bottom of profiles while compatibility and self representation are priorities.

2. Gift Registries
Soon-to-be-wed seniors likely don’t need another blender, so alternative registries are proving just the ticket. CardAvenue is a wedding gift registry that lets them register for desirable gift cards, including those for stores, airlines, gas, etc. Cloud9Living allows couples to register for desired experiences, like hot-air ballooning in the Rockies, taking gourmet cooking classes in Houston, race car driving in Las Vegas, and much more.

3. Wedding Websites
Personal wedding websites are the latest rage, and WedShare.com in particular has reached out to seniors with it’s easy-to-use message. The company provides a free domain name, customizable website themes and matching eCards, a monetary gift registry with PayPal, and much more. Other similar sites include MyWeddingHosting.com, eWedding.com and Momentville.com. To comparison shop, check out WeddingWebsites.com.

4. Therapy for the Kids
Roughly 500,000 Americans over the age of 65 remarry each year, and most already have adult children, according to Grace Gabe, a psychiatrist and co-author of “Step Wars: Overcoming the Perils and Making Peace in Adult Stepfamilies.” Remembering their parent’s former spouse, the kids may have trouble accepting a new relationship. This has opened up an entirely new species of therapist. While many cater to younger audiences, there are those who provide assistance to both young and old alike.

5. Prenuptial Agreements
No longer a legal document solely for the rich, lawyers are creating prenuptial agreements designed specifically for seniors looking to protect their children’s inheritances or not interested in once-again paying alimony.

Disney Wants to Know How Connected Are Your Kids To Nature?

Hello Lovelies,

Trips to the zoo, collecting autumn leaves, reading Ranger Rick – sound like memories from your childhood?  If you’re like me, then yes, they do.

But here’s a question: do they sound like a part of your kids’ lives today?

It’s an interesting question we parents should all ask ourselves.

Pittman & Davis

On that note, Disney tells us it’s convening a number of top experts on the issue this week in Orlando as part of its Disney Kids and Nature Celebration (the event also includes a day-long youth summit and the screening of its upcoming movie “Chimpanzee”), and we got some insight on the discussion.  Former Ranger Rick subscribers, listen up:

According to Richard Louv, a Disney partner and author of the bestselling books Last Child in the Woods and The Nature Principle, every child needs nature.  Not exactly a groundbreaking revelation – but certainly one that poses challenges when you look at your weekly calendar (where’d the white space go?).

Here’s some advice we can take away from his philosophy and the bigger discussion in Orlando:

1.      Get nostalgic. Take a moment to talk to a grandparent – or even a peer – about his or her favorite nature memories from childhood – was it skipping stones? A favorite picture book about elephants? Drawing horses? Climbing trees?  These simple memories might be enough to remind you just how easy it can be to make nature part of your own parenting style.

2.      Think manageable.  Connecting kids with nature doesn’t require a family trip to Yellowstone (phew). What it really takes is getting your kids curious about animals, wildlife and the outdoors – the world beyond their house and school.  What do baby turtles eat? Why do leaves change colors?  How do fish breath underwater? What kind of insect is that in your backyard? Hikes, museums, books and videos can all help spark that fascination.

3.      Teach early lessons.  Intuitively, we know kids need to learn about and appreciate nature.  But what are the real benefits?  For one, it’s a sensory explosion for their young minds.  Reading about how birds build nests, watching a baby elephant play, touching a sheep’s coat, smelling a rose or digging a carrot out of the soil  — all of this stimulates curiosity in young minds.

More important, however, is that it instills a love of nature.  And if our kids love nature – won’t they be more likely to protect it?

Food for thought!  Now I’m off to take the kids to the zoo…

New Dr. Miracle Curl Care Collection; A Naturalista’s Dream

Hello Mavens,

It’s April already and that puts us four months into the new year. With Spring blooming everywhere, I’ve decide to talk natural with all of my fellow “naturalistas out there! March madness included the coveted launch of Dr. Miracle’s New Curl Care Rehydrating Shampoo
Nourishing Conditioner Frizz Control Serum Soft Hold Creme Weightless Moisturizing Creme and Boosting & Defining Leave In Conditioner,
stylishly FAB paraben and sulfate free natural hair care line, which promises to keep curls firm and moist for 24 hours. Now this is one of the reasons why I love my job. I had the pleasure to review the entire collection courtesy of Dr. Miracle. I had no idea what I was about to experience!

Let’s just say that the Dr. really has a faithful evangelist here! Media Maven was astound to discover that it was finally possible to have the same renowned benefits of what makes Dr. Miracle so good, in addition to it being paraben and sulfate free – is like watching President Obama win the election for the first time (all over again).

127438_Handbags_6608_20120227_160x600 A new trend is in the air. Texture is taking over! FYI… more than 50% of African-American women no longer chemically relax their hair and the multicultural community has finally begun to embrace our naturally curly hair textures. The need for treatment and styling products designed to preserve and enhance our hair is at an all-time high! Rocking our “naturally” grown waves, curls, coils and kinks has become more than a just a widespread style or money-saving faze to avoid the salon. It’s actually a lifestyle. It…like any commitment, takes time and energy! When we invest our time, money and energy into a beauty regimen, it’s essential to receive the right tools from a trusted brand, that we already know will get the job done! Trial and error isn’t “liked” here, which means “there will be no trying of “new-never-tried-before” products!” That’s why Dr. Miracle’s created this amazing collection which guarantees to “help users get and keep long, healthy, beautiful curls – Dr. Miracle’s.”

  • The shampoo is so silky and smooth to the touch. The formula is gel based and has an amazing smell, which calms and sets the mood. The minty tingle blends “with aloe – to soften and improve elasticity”, “coconut and vitamin E – to nourish and soften curls”, “vitamins A, E and Panthenol – to nourish curls as it gently cleanse”, “coconut and jojoba oil and vitamin E to moisture, soften and condition”, “jojoba and protein to strengthen and moisturize,” to deliver lustrous volume and moisture (moisture barrier *coating*) in “natural” harmony.
  • The conditioner is bliss in whipped form. It adds the perfect cherry to top the cleansing “ritual” of the Rehydrating Shampoo.

This “Leap Year”, let Rebirth, Renewal & Refresh be your guides (much like your very own personal fated Goddesses). Primp up that beach beauty hair regimen with Dr. Miracle’s  summer sizzling look to compliment those bikini ready FABshionably stylistic bods!
